We specified 17.5mm toughened laminated glass throughout and there are solid engineering reasons for this choice.
Toughened glass provides approximately five times the strength of standard glass, which is crucial for withstanding wind loads and potential impacts. The laminated construction is equally important – if damage occurs, the glass remains in place rather than falling, which is exactly what building regulations expect for external installations.
Structural Spigot System: Clean Engineering
We used structural spigots to mount the glass panels. While some installers prefer traditional posts and rails, spigots provide that floating appearance whilst delivering superior structural performance.
Each spigot is precision-engineered to transfer loads directly into the building structure. We use 316-grade stainless steel because our climate requires materials that can withstand long-term exposure. The engineering calculations account for wind pressure, thermal movement, and impact loads.
Solving the Privacy Problem
Rather than using obscure glass throughout, we installed obscure glass panels specifically on the left and right sides where the owners required privacy. The front panels remained clear to preserve the view.
